I've been looking for and researching waterproof GPS systems and I'm a bit overwhelmed. I don't need anything fancy, all I need is something to track mileage...any advice/ideas on best relatively cheap possibilities?

If you just want to track mileage, and if you have a smartphone, you might be happy with MapMyRun -- a free app that works on your phone. When I use MapMyRun, I turn it on, stow it in a dry bag, and then paddle. It can also tell you your mile splits each mile if you like. After paddling, your data (including miles paddled and speed) automatically uploads to MapMyRun.com At that point you can login to your online account to check your miles paddled. I hope this helps!

I have an older Garmin 910XT that is great. They are pretty inexpensive on ebay as it's an older model.

When I do use a GPS, it's my Etrex Legend from 2002. Handheld, waterproof (mostly) and rugged enough that it still works after 15 years. Maybe there's some still on Ebay.
But what I've found is that the more I paddle, the less I've been using the GPS.
