According to the BDN, or at least one of its bloggers, the annual Madawaska River Run (Westmanland - Stockholm) is being held on Sunday, May 20th. Is there any particular reason this race hasn't been listed by MaCKRO in the three years I've been following along? It seems to be a well-attended race; the last results I could find listed over 110 paddlers. As I'm a flatwater guy, I'd like to know more about it.

First off, I've not done the race; but I've spoken with some competitive racers who've done it several times. I hear they always draw many boats, but few of the paddlers are actually racing. Sounds like a scenic course and a good length. Historically it has not been advertised well. I've asked one of my buddies who has done the race many times to add his two-cents worth, so we'll see if he responds.

The Madawaska Stream Race in Stockholm has been around for about 40 years. It does have a great turnout. It is a rite of spring for most participants who are mostly locals Very few people actually race. Most just float down the 6.5 mile course It is a twisty narrow stream. It has a good flow in most places. Some years the race is fairly shallow in most spots. When I race it, me and my known competition keep our own times on our gps's as sometimes there are mistakes with the timing. I don't take the race seriously. The course is a very fun and challenging especially in a flatwater boat, which is the best part. I like to race my flat water c-1. If you bring you flat water c-1 and finish the course without flipping I will gladly present you with one of my Death proof decals for your boat. When it's shallow I race a beater boat. Hope this helps.

Seems like we should have it on the calendar. There are other relaxed, racing-optional races on the list.

I'm sorry for my tardy to response to this thread I started. Thank you, Chris, Fran, and Fred, for your responses. Comprehensive information, which is truly appreciated by this paddler!
MaCKRO, I haven't been shy about my criticisms of this organization in the past (I canceled my membership after a single season), and I won't be shy here. This race should be on the calendar. I'm much more interested in Maine races than, say, those in Colorado. This is basic.
Thank you.

I agree that it sounds like a fun race. I agree that it should be listed.
On the other hand, I don't believe that MaCKRO has ever refused to list a race when requested. I guess what I am saying is that at least half of the responsibility lies with the race director: contact MaCKRO and ask that the race be listed.
I will pass this conversation on to Eric G., who is currently handling the race listing calendar. In order to list a race, MaCKRO does need to receive the basic items in a typical race description.
Thanks! Ray

Event is now posted to the MaCKRO Calendar, Facebook and listed in the online doc detailing race information.
Sorry to hear you are so dissatisfied with MaCKRO. Doing our best as volunteers to promote competitive paddling in Maine.
