Hannah Rubin, Kellen Doyle, and Stanley Levitsky comprise MaCKRO's three-person Junior Wildwater Team. They've been training very hard, and I'm taking them to the Nantahala River in N.C. at the beginning of August so that they can compete to try to get on the USA Junior Wildwater Team. The team trials consist of two days of racing - one day to compete in the Classic (downriver) event, and another day to compete in two runs on the Sprint course. The paddlers' rankings are determined by a mathematical calculation that includes all three of the runs.
Should any of them make the US Junior Team, they'll then get to compete during the subsequent five days representing the U.S.A. at the ICF Junior Wildwater World Championships. The Worlds will take place on the same race course as the team trials, and will be contested by paddlers from upwards of 15 countries.
All in all this will require a 14-day trip and the kids have organized a fundraiser this coming Friday, July 10th, from 6-8pm at the Black Bear Brewery taproom in Orono. 10% of all proceeds for those two hours will go to the team's travel expenses. The kids will have a wildwater boat or two on display and they're prepared video of the sport for everyone's entertainment and education.
Please come support the kids as they rise up and challenge the world - and, please spread the word to your paddling friends who might not be checking this forum this time of year.
If you can't attend but would still like to support the kids, feel free to contact me to make arrangements.
Thanks!
