The big headline from the Clinton is MAINE MIXED RELAY TEAM RECLAIMS TITLE! beating out the much vaunted and cocky WCC team (last year's winner) from DC and the rest of a large and highly competitive field in very challenging and low water conditions. Congrats to Tammy, Chip, Bob, Clayton, Katie, Ander, Laurie, Justin, and Kaz's lady friend! (name?) (( did I miss anyone?)). Really, a very impressive performance that reflects very well on Maine paddlers and paddling.
The second headline is WE ALL SURVIVED! Boy, was the water low and the headwind stiff. tough on the equipment, both boat boat and body. Yet I am sure I speak for all when I say "can't wait to get back next year! " Cheers Ja

Another Clinton Headline--FOUR NEW ADDITIONS TO LIST OF MAINERS COMPLETING THE 70--Four newbies from Maine tackled the 70-miler this year: John Cangelosi, Mike Sproul, Kate Muir, and (I think) Bob Mitchell. Congratulations to each for completing such a difficult endurance event, particularly in the face of blisters, sore butts, nausea and (in John's words) silent suffering. It was a pleasure to hang with you all for the long weekend! And my congrats to the relay team, too. Not only were they victorious in a hard-fought race, but most paddled the 70 the next day. A DVD of this and past Clinton Relays will be available soon--let me know if you'd like a copy. Hope to see you on June 7th at the Sebec race. Bring a newbie!

The unnamed relay team member was Laura Griskevitch. Laura is John Kaz' girlfriend and pit person and was my partner in the final, stressful last leg where we managed to hang on to a 30 some second lead delivered to Laura and I by Bob Hessler and Katie Muir for the final 10 second margin of victory (after a 4hr 30 min race). There were 3 lead changes in the race. The Washington Canoe Club actually had five entries in the race - four in the mixed event. All well trained and competitive. Several of the 2nd place team members competed in the C2Pro & C1 race Mon! I found them all mostly gracious and sportsmanlike! I am proud to have competed with them. Perhaps the most impressive performance from a NE paddler was that of my good friend John Kaz who beat the legendary Calvin Hassel by a mind blowing 11 minutes in the C1Pro race collecting his 2nd C1pro victory. Congrats to Kaz!!!!

oh Yessss! There is a missing paddler on Johns list and on the results. One Dr. Billy Deghian who preferred to remain anonymous on account of he was supposed to be on call or some such thing but decided to go to NY and wear a hole in his butt instead! (TO PREPARE FOR THE UPCOMING YUKON QUEST 400 MILER) Your secret is safe with us Billy!! Clayton
