They only postponed one other time, eh? Well, I guess that was the time about 20 years ago when they had really high water. I called the night before the race to see if there was a chance it might be postponed. I was told, "Oh, they'll definitely run the race tomorrow!" So--I drove down early the next day to find a sign at the start area saying "race postponed." Man, was I ripped. Just to prove to myself how bad it wasn't, I paddled the course anyway and it was no harder than it ever was. This race has also been notorious for getting your time wrong. It was this race that convinced me that it's a good idea to keep track of your own time. I can remember losing to boats that I passed on the river.
Another funny one: I followed the link listed in the previous post that takes you to the Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis site. The headline says, "A Look Back At The 1992 Canoe Race." Well, they got that wrong, too; it was from 1983. One of the pictures is of a "young" me (with beard and hair!), and that picture was on the cover of their race program for 1984. So, I guess they're still having trouble getting their "times" correct.
And I'm guessing the real reason for changing the date is so they wouldn't be running on the same Saturday as the Kenduskeag; I can't blame 'em for that!
All that being said . . . that race course is one of my all-time favorites!
