Here's an idea for the new year - How about our own Triple Crown on three consecutive Sundays in August?
Penobscot 50 Kennebec 50 Androscoggin 50
These are all races that have existed in the past, and I've heard some murmurs over the past couple years about each of them. Let's do it. I'm sure there are those among us that know the old race courses, or we can create new ones.
Keep them informal with no fees and no registration. Only three prizes - Woman, Man and Youth with the fastest combined times for all three events.
Just think what we could do to Dan's annual tally of Paddler-Miles!!!

Jeff,
A great Idea! Perhaps just naming each race (Gorham to Rumford Race)? That would be a 40 if it started below the power dam. No portages!. I did the Kennebec 50. Great starting spot. Some "interesting" portages on that one. Not familiar with the Penobscott 50. How about a similar "race" around Mt. Desert island?
You would have to be careful about liability. Word of mouth? A fun paddle from Gorham to Rumford on (date / time). Two of any class would make a class / race.

I think it is a great idea. According to the current race schedule the following weekends are open
June 21,22. July 26,27. Aug 30,31, Sept 6,7. Sept 13,14
I suggest we pick dates get them on the race schedule and then work out the details to add later. My preference would be any of the July Aug Sept dates

Alright, here are the dates:
Sunday, June 22 - Androscoggin 50 Sunday, July 27 - Kennebec 50 Sunday, August 31 - Penobscot 50
Someone please get them on the calendar. Very little organization needed but we should have a point person for each event.

I can get them posted on the race calendar. Any volunteers for point/contact persons? I am willing to be the point/contact person for the Penobscot.

I will help with the Androscoggin plans. Jeanie and I are currently planning to paddle our pro boat from Bethel to Rumford on June 22nd. We will probably be starting around 12:00 noon. I imagine our finishing time will depend on how many other boats are in the way. Ha! We would welcome any company. If there is interest we can change our put in to just below the dam in Gorham. That makes it about a 40+ mile paddle. No portages!! A beautiful river. One riffle and a few possible rocks to avoid if the water is low. gfatula@gmail.com

The 3, 50 mile triple crown races are tentativly on the race schedule. I will coordinate the Penobscot race in August. The Androscoggin is coming up in two weeks (June 21). George are you willing to coordinate this? If so I suggest getting some details out soon so the word can get out.
Thanks,
Dan Baumert

Dan and all,
Our paddling plans have changed. Jeanie has to work that day so we won't be paddling together as we originally hoped. I am interested in "helping" with this "event". I understand it will be a "non race". An informal gathering of interested paddlers who will all start together and paddle down the river more or less "together".
Perhaps a signup sheet for the "gathering" would be available at the put in. Those interested could indicate who they were paddling with and what they were going to paddle. Someone, that could be me, could say aloud to the gathered paddlers, "Lets GO". A mass start of all participants could leave the public access landing area in Bethel, between Hastings Island and Rt. 26. at 11:00 am on Sunday, June 22nd. After a "comfortable paddle" down the river we could gather to share our experiences of the day at the public landing, river left, a short distance west of the McDonalds on Rt 2. Just upriver from Rumford. Each paddler could enter their comments about their trip and, if they wished, the time it took them, into the same log they signed at the start in Bethel. The actual start time would be noted at the start by each person and the time they finished would also be their responsibility.
As everyone knows. in any canoeing experience, responsible paddlers always assist others having difficulty if they encounter someone. All paddlers know to have PFds for each paddler in their boat. Because this is not an organized race, just an informal paddle there is no expectation of any safety personnel anywhere along the route.
I know it has been talked about having this outing cover 50 miles. Perhaps next year? It seems the distance will be O.K. for the first such outing and the public access to the river will make it easy for all who would like to join the fun. Bring your own lunch!
I will be at the public landing in Bethel on Sunday morning, the 22nd. I might bring a C-1 and take my time paddling down to Rumford. I will enjoy any company that shows up.
