There was a rumor of the Acadia Triathlon returning. Anyone know anything about this?

Yes--but $30 a pop? Or a team for $120?? That's a lot of cash!

Fred, shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Most mini tri's are $75 and larger tri's are upwards of $250 or so. $30 for a tri which involves getting people for three different areas to babysit racers is a lot better deal than paying 20 - 25 bucks for a short paddle race or 5K that involves very little involvemnt in comparison.

I assume you mean prices are lower up north?? This is why I/we have given up most racing. I can race all winter for less than one paddle race here. $2.00 per race, can you believe it?

The MaCKRO flatwater series races were FREE. (Of course, donations were accepted, but still . . . )

Race fees are interesting to me in that they represent the methods and purposes of the hosts. For the two MaCKRO series, our coffers take a hit when we purchase the awards. The DR series provides no revenue to cover those costs, so we use donations at the FW series events to try to recoup some fraction of the costs from both Series. Membership fees and donations need to cover the rest, and have done so now for a couple years.
Other races have different methods and purposes. Some have race fees designed to simply cover costs--low costs equal low fees, and visa versa. Others try to cover costs and raise some money for a worthy cause, and the price begins to climb.
Triathlons present a multi-faceted situation, much of which seems to depend on the location and on the organizer's commitment to the timing. If the location requires many crossings of busy main streets, police time needs to be purchased to keep the racers safe. If "chip" timing is desired, the fee seems to go way up making me think a company has to be hired to provide that type of timing.
As Paula has said many times before, small races don't make money and may not even cover costs. Organizers of those races have "providing a neat experience" as their main objective. We can afford to, and really can't afford not to, support these small events.....to keep them going year to year. That said, the big races provide something entirely different, and we go to however many of them we can afford.
