Here are the photos I took at the Ghent Road bridge earlier today: www.mainecanoeraces.com/stgeorge2010/index.htmlI didn't notice the banana strapped to the bow of Ray W.'s kayak until I got home: I also found this amusing. At the race, I stood next to a couple who were probably about ten years older than I am. We watched a canoe coming down through the rapids...sideways. And then Fred Ludwig Bruce Weik shot out of nowhere (it seemed) and zipped by everybody in his spiffy bright pink-ish racing kayak. It was pretty unexpected, and I hardly had enough time to get a snapshot. The gentleman next to me turned to his wife and said "Whoa! Did you see how fast that guy in the pink kayak was going?!" to which his wife replied, "Is that what that was? I thought I was having a hot flash." Sounds like a good name for a race boat, but maybe that's just me.

Hi Mike: that wasn't me in the Wavehopper. I went to the race, but about 20 minutes before arriving at the start area I had an episode of atrial fibrillation and had to head home. The same thing happened about a month ago and they had to "paddle" me to get the heart back in the correct rhythm. The water looked perfect! Maybe I'll make it to the Passy.

The mystery Wavehopper guy is Bruce Weik. Sounds like his run through Robbins was NICE!

Sorry to hear about your heart issue, Fred. Wishing you the best and hoping to see you at the starting line at the Passy. Sadly the banana didn't make it all the way down through. (I was looking forward to eating it at the finish). I had an "interesting" time in the whitewater as my SRS paddle got twisted to a unfamiliar feather position above the Ghent Road bridge. I didn't stop to straighten it out until a mile or so later. Let's just say I was not as smooth in the whitewater as I would have liked to be. Race results are now up at www.mackro.org/2010_results/st_george_river_race.pdfNice to see a good turnout, and thanks to the Waldo County YMCA for running another great race. And a big thank you, Michael, for the photos.

The sdieways canoe with Bruce Weik was Krystal Mudgett (Orono student) and myself. I do remember Bruce flying by us. We managed to slide sideways off of the rock we were hung up on and stayed upright. We went under the bridge backwards, got turned around before the next white water and finished ok. Not the textbook way to run Robbins but we got quite a reaction from the spectators.
