what is the best way to build up arm strength for paddling without signing up for a gym membership? i am wondering what people here do at home to get into shape for races.

Basic Strength--core, torso, arms: --sit-ups, crunches, V-sits, etc. --back extensions --seated rows --pull-ups (hands both ways) --push-ups (with a "plus" shoulder extension at the limit) --curls --dips --all rotator cuff exercises
All of these can be done at home with a bit of imagination, some stretchy fitness bands. And all of them can be done on a cheap, used, Total Gym.

the key to our teams sucess is that we cut firewood 3 days a week with a cross cut saw and do 25 jumping jacks before we put our boat in the water on race day.
