Ran the Passy in the rain this afternoon. The river is already at a nice level and will be even higher by race day (Saturday). It looks to be an excellent ride this year! With one exception (see below), the main channel of the river is free of ice. There are a number of places where shelves of ice extend outward from the riverbank, and constrict the channel somewhat. For this reason, the river is currently a little more technical and a little more dangerous than when it is free of ice -- and I'd suggest that those who haven't paddled this river before wait a few days and / or make sure to go with someone who knows the river. My guess is that much of the remaining ice will likely clear out within the next few days. 0.3 mile to 0.5 mile down from the Poors Mills Road Bridge (and the start of the whitewater), the channel to the right has a downed tree that is covered with snow and ice, making the channel impassible. (See photos below). We portaged here, but it looks like you could go river left and make it ok, but the passage between the rocks is quite narrow. The above photo shows the approach to this fork in the river. The above photo shows the tree and ice shelf that blocks the passage if you try to go river right.

3/30/09 update: Skip and Chris paddled the river this morning. They commented: "The level was fantastic. The ice bridge had disappeared. I removed a couple small limbs at that point. There still is a log across that channel, however at this water level one should be able to slide right across."
They also stated that the small strainer I had reported had been washed out of the channel.
Safe paddling everyone!

A beautiful afternoon on the river. The Passy is at a great level now. The shoreline ice has receded significantly since the weekend. The level has also come up 6 inches or more since Sunday, making the river a lot less technical than it was.
