I've talked with Paula and Jamie about their experience with low back disc surgeries, but I'm wondering if anyone on this board has had disc surgery for their neck. If so, what was your problem and how is it now? I've had two low back disc jobs on L4/L5 and I consider both successful and I'm glad I had them; but this neck thing, I'm not so sure about.

I have had two cervical repairs. C 5-6 and C 6-7. They were 20 years apart. After the first one Southern Maine Neurosurgical told me I would never paddle again. That was back in 1983. My first serious race back was the 88 WWO nationals and I won it! My latest cervical repair was 5 years ago and I paddle all the time, camping and racing. I have also had a lumbar repair. Find the right Dr. and get it fixed! It is like throwing a switch if it is done right.

Hi George: thanks for the info and the advice. I did see a neurosurgeon a few weeks ago. As of the past month, my neck pain has pretty much vanished. So I don't need to do anything at the moment.

Only you know what you need to do. I had no choice. I was in serious trouble and not getting anything done was not an option. For my lumbar problem, which had nearly crippled me, I went through three Dr.s before I settled on the one who operated. Be careful and trust no one but yourself.
Good luck with it. I will see you on the water.
