Has anyone ran the St. George yet? Was up there today photographing and it looks awesome; at least at the finish and at Robbin's Mill, didn't go to the top.

I hope to take a look at and hopefully paddle the St. George this weekend. Will report back when I do. Heard one report that the rapids were open as of last week. Not sure about the flatwater sections, though.

3-14-08: Well I did get out on the Georgie this afternoon. Sun even came out. The 6 mile section between Searsmont and the Route 105 bridge in North Appleton) clear of ice all the way down through. The drop at Magog (which apparently had been obstructed earlier this week by a fallen tree) is clear as well. It was a sweet, sweet run today. I'd put the level at the high side of medium. Didn't touch a rock with boat or paddle all the way down through. (Not to say there weren't rocks I could have touched). ;D
I'm going to try to get out there tomorrow -- and again on Sunday. If anyone is interested in joining up, let me know.

Unbelievable! We won't be paddling up this way for weeks yet; maybe even a month! (But we will be skiing probably half-way through April!) : )

Paddled the George again today. River level was 8 - 12" lower, which made it a bit more technical, but still fun. A large log (see photo below) has positioned itself in an unfortunate spot just below the drop immediately upstream from the Ghent Road. Caught me by surprise (either it wasn't there two days ago, or the higher water level made it irrelevant), spun my boat sideways, and over I went. Glad I got that out of my system. ;D

3-22-08: St. George River, Searsmont to North Appleton: Nice run on the river today. Despite the cold temperatures and lack of rain over the last 4 days, the evel is back up where it was 8 days ago. (A very fun and manageable level). Anyone who has a chance to run the river tomorrow (Easter Sunday) is in for a treat!

Something tells me it must be warmer than 8 degrees where you are . . . I read where Dale Cross said there must be a couple of feet of snow in the woods to provide a good runoff. I still have a pile of snow at the end of my driveway that is 15' tall--no joke! I hope xc skiing is a good replacement for paddlling because up this way we'll be skiing into May!

3-27-08: Paddled the St. George with H.I. Hassey today. The water level is decent, and by my reckoning, likely to rise just a tad by racetime on Saturday. (The warmer days yesterday and today seem to be helping the level back up again -- and wet snow is forecast for tomorrow). I'd describe the level as just on the the low side of medium (for this time of year). With a fair amount of skill and a little luck, you could make a wholly clean run.
The river is a very fun, safe level. Probably be excellent for first-timers and very good for the rest of us. See you at the race on Saturday!
