Maines` own Alex McLain finished 2nd in the U.S. Surfski Championships in San Francisco last weekend. Alex is a student at Bowdoin College and has been very strong throughout the paddling season this year. Read the story here: home.maine.rr.com/nesurfski/Also , for anyone interested there`s a race in Beverly , MA. this weekend. 8 miles on salt water...See race details below : Yes, we are going to have a race. I have inherited the race from Mike Handa and am going to keep it as an SS/OC-1 & 2 race just as he had done...at least for this year. Next year could be different but that is next year. The race will be Sept 27th 2008 and will start at 10:00 AM at Lynch Park, Beverly, MA... just as it always has. Most of the you know how to get here. It will be a no cost, very informal race with no safety boats. All of you should have no problems plus many of you have done the course before. Please feel free to invite anyone that you feel is qualified to compete. Any questions, drop me a note. Edkaylngctr@comcast.net

I can believe that about Alex. I decided to race Megunticook this year for the first time in many years. I showed up with two boats--a 23' unlimited kayak and a 17' ICF sprint kayak. I had planned to race the unlimited, but after seeing a car pull in with two ICFs on it, I decided I had better take my much-faster ICF boat. I made the right choice as I most likely would have lost to Alex if I had taken the other boat. She is definitely "for real!" Congrats, Alex!
