Four spring canoe races are in danger of being dropped from the schedule permanently. Unless new organizers are found, up to four races will disappear from the WW point Series The Bangor Y will not be putting on the Souadabscook or Marsh races, leaving both races without an organizer. The organizers of the Machias and Union Races have announced they will be not putting those races on in 2014.
I call on interested MaCKRO members to join me this Tuesday night 2/4/14 at the Sea Dog Restaurant at 6:30PM in Bangor to explore ideas on how these races might be restored to the schedule. We need volunteers.
I plan to organize the first ever WW canoe/kayak race on the Penobscot river between Old Town/Orono and Veazie/Eddington. It will be in July, possibly Saturday 7/12. The WW will be Class I-III, historical flows for July avg 4000-6000cfs. The river is very wide, mixed FW and rapids, standing waves, offering multiple routes. The length of the race will be 6-8 miles, although it is possible to paddle from Old Town all the way to Bangor for a longer 12-14 mile race.
Lets turn this situation into an opportunity to inject new life into these races and energize WW racing in Bangor!

Wow. This is disappointing to say the least, but if we all pull together, we can turn a negative into a positive and maybe make these races bigger and better than ever.

Thinking that is both Machias River races? That would be 5 races? Not good. Has there been any progress on finding support for these?

Most or all of the races will run this year. This is great news. Much thanks and appreciation goes to those who attended the meeting and made the commitments to ensure that these races will continue. The next meeting is to plan details of the 2014 Sou, Marsh, Machias, Union, and Penobscot races is Thursday Feb 20 at Geaghan's Pub in Bangor at 6:30 p.m.
