What's the Union river salmon run like? Looking to find out about the drops and rapids, how to plan and scout it, what to watch out for. (Boy, wouldn't it be great if MACKRO could gather descriptions of the races under one Tab like "Race Descriptions, layouts, put-ins, takeouts, tips"? the race section doesn't have stream info (see Machias races for instance)

The people in the best position to do such river / race descriptions would be race directors. It would be a good way for them to promote their races. The Union River race traditionally begins below the Graham Lake Dam north of Ellsworth. There is one portage around the dam on the lower end of Leonard Lake. The race traditionally ends at the boat landing which is a short way downstream from the Route 1 bridge in Ellsworth. maps.google.com/maps?q=graham+lake+ellsworth+maine&hl=en&ll=44.563567,-68.400879&spn=0.058217,0.153637&client=firefox-a&hnear=Graham+Lake&gl=us&safe=strict&t=m&z=13 The race is usually run following a a dam release. I'm not sure what the level would be, for example, if you tried to run it this weekend. The race is mostly flatwater with a few sections of relatively easy (Class I, minimal Class II) whitewater. Maybe some others can add some more info.

I would agree with Ray's description. About 1/2 mile or so above the RT. 1 bridge is the only real significant drop above Rt. 1 that you can just barley see from the bridge. At higher water it could be a class II. It's pretty straight forward where to go through the drop which is river left. Any other tricky parts are below the Rt. 1 bridge which you can scout out by bush whacking on river left. The portage is a good workout! Anyway that's how I remember it.
