For those seeking some fun WW class II+ action you have some great choices!
Saturday - East (Machias) River a short 5-6 mile race. Starts in a lake and finishes with a 1/4 mile class II-III rapid
Sunday - Machias River race - 10 miles, Class II+. Lots of FW for first half, intermittent class II in the middle, great class II + finish with Airline rapids in a wilderness setting.
Next Sat-Sun: Do you prefer the Kenduskeag with water in it?? Plan to attend the Kenduskeag Canoe-Kayak Slalom. Practice the course for free all day Sat, sign up for the 2 mile DR race 4pm Sat - starts at Bulls-Eye Bridge, finish downstream of Shopping Cart rapid - two optional portages.
Sunday 8:30am to 2 pm- the slalom races including and easy course for beginners. Bring a WW canoe or Kayak and give it a try.
Shuttling for all three events should be easy to sort out - just show up and start asking other paddlers!

Is the Route 1 bridge the finish of the East Machias race? Everything I have read refers to "mill park", but my Delorme and Mapquest don't know where that is. Thanks.

Ben,
The park lies in between the two bridges: Rt 191 & Water St or Willow St depending on your map. The finish is the downstream bridge - Willow/Water. If you look at a satellite image (Try Yahoo or Google maps) you will see the great rapid that runs through the 'park' The park is really a a grassy area bordering the stream alongside Water street.
here is a landmark - visible from Rt 1A is a fishery research facility with several rows of PV solar panels on the south right next to the bridge.
Trust your instincts - drive down there you will smell out the rapid and other paddlers.
