The Aroostook River race is scheduled for Saturday May 12th. This race was scheduled last year, however, was canceled due to lack of pre-registrations. In speaking with race director Randy Michaud that will be the case again this year unless they are guaranteed of at least 20 participants. They have folks that come from other areas to help with safety, etc. for the race so they would like a minimum number of participants to make it worth the effort. If you are considering doing the Aroostook River race please pre-register at rmichaud36.tripod.com or at least let Randy know at Rmichaud42@roadrunner.com by this coming Friday. You could also let me know and I can forward it on to Randy. At this point the extended forecast is 66 and sunny for Presque Isle on the 12th so it should be a great day on the water. Hopefully the race can be held this year. Thanks, Dan Baumert

Breaks my heart that the Aroostook River 30 is on the same day as the East Grand Adventure Race. I think this happened last year, too. I, and probably 3 or 4 teams of my high school paddlers, would readily do the 30 if there weren't a conflict.
I really value the Aroostook 30 as an important race in Maine, and hope, hope, hope that it can continue to be offered every year. I think this is a prime example of why race directors need to communicate with each other to minimize conflicting dates. If only one or the other were a day later on Sunday........
That said, I know there is always some hesitancy about offering races on Sunday. But there's a reason to do so. If your sponsors are associated with food and lodging, some people might not travel home Saturday night and will instead support the race sponsors for dinner, lodging, and breakfast. It sure worked out that way last weekend at the Machias, and it was REALLY fun.
I'll miss the 30 this year, but hope it works out next year.

Can Randy or someone post the results of the race from 2010? I think the page they were on was recycled. Is the race course all flatwater/quickwater? How long is the portage?
I've never done the race, although I have been tempted.

No Whitewater; portage is around the Caribou dam and is a few hundred yards.

The 30 Mile Aroostook River Canoe & Kayak Race has been CANCELED for this year. I could not convince the committee to continue to hold the race. We did talk about maybe holding it on a different day next year as there seems to be some conflict with other races.
I want to thank everyone for the phone calls and the one's that did pre-register your support was greatly appreciated.
Thanks
