The Passagassawakeag River Race is ON, with the course changed due to the low water level. Here's the announcement from Dale Cross: The Waldo County YMCA will be holding their second canoe race of the season! Join us as we rise to meet the challenge of low water on the river! We are calling this race the “Passy Shoot-out or Paddle Battle”
This exciting race will begin at bridge at the Littlefield Farm – same as always!!! The racers will meet this exciting challenge as they head down stream for 2.5 miles. There they will be directed by a race official to turn around at a buoy station and head back up stream!
There will be one mandatory portage on the return upstream, around the Snowmobile Bridge drop. Racers will exit to the right, which will be clearly marked with surveyors tape. Once they finish the portage they will re-enter the river to finish at the bridge on Poors Mill Road.
All awards will be given out back at the start of the race on the Littlefield Farm. Maine Sport Outfitters will be on hand at the end of the race to provide racers with a hotdog lunch. One lucky racer will win a new Old Town Canoe!!

This should be interesting. Will they still launch 2 boats per minute? Is that going to create some traffic between the buoy station and the Poors Mill bridge? Maybe that's an intended "extra obstacle"?

Maybe that's an intended "extra obstacle"? That must be the "Shoot Out" part! Even with low water I think there's enough elbow room on that stretch of river, except around the drop and there upstreamers will be portaging. Probably Dale will give some rules of the road in the pre-race briefing. (But if you'd like to take out a few fast OC1R paddlers for me maybe we can make a deal ;D) It'll be a blast. It's a real river, so it's different every year. "Remember that year we turned around and went back up ..."

This has been announced elsewhere, but in case anyone didn't see, the MaCKRO clinic tonight has been cancelled.
