Dale Cross of the Waldo County YMCA today (sponsor of the St. George and Passy Races) assured me today that the St. George Race is a go for this Saturday.
Water levels on the St. George look to be on the low side for this time of year, which will mean more maneuvering around rocks, according to Dale. Beginning paddlers may especially appreciate this level, as the river is likely to be more forgiving of mistakes than it is at higher water levels.
A midweek rain might help bring the level up toward medium. The race-day forecast is for sun and clouds and temps close to 50 degrees.
Bring sunglasses and sunscreen and hope to need them!
Don't forget about the St. George Clinic on Friday afternoon.

Thanks for the update Ray. This will be my first time down the St. G. With anticipated levels do you think it will bang up my fiberglass boat? Would you suggest I bring a plastic craft?

I'm still hoping to use my kevlar kayak -- but I also know the lines. Bring both boats if you can -- and then make your final decision after taking a look at the river. The section directly above and below the Ghent Road bridge should give you a good idea of what to expect and how much rock-scraping is gonna be going on.

Photos taken today from the Ghent Road Bridge. The level is low but passable. With any luck, today's rain/snow mix will bring the level up another 3 inches for race day.

Ray, are you still going to run the Swallow? I also wanted to thank you for posting all these updates because my schedule does not permit me to attend the clinics. It is very helpful for those of us who want to get into the races but are unfamiliar with the rivers. What does Magog look like at these water levels?

Ben, I'm not sure yet if I'll be paddling the kevlar Swallow that I usually paddle. (Know any good composites repair people?) Magog was a bit bony / seemed to require at least a slight hull scrape but definitely very do-able. Same route as usual. I like to angle slightly to the right after I initiate the drop.

If you are on the fence Ray then I guess I will bring the Tupperware Ferry. Thanks for the insight. See you tomorrow!
