Here are a few tips for running Magog, mostly contributed by others -- and then tested on the river many times. (1) Approach from river center. There is a tall hemlock tree (not the pine to the left of it) that can be used to guide your approach. (2) The best slot to take the drop is just left of river center. At the present level, it isn't well defined. But "just left of center" works a little better than "center" for finding it. (3) plant a paddle on the left side and nose slightly right as you reach the bottom of the drop.
Good luck!

You can view Magog from river right but it is quite a hike. I believe the road is named Lime Kiln Rd. which is about a mile or so up from the old Tri-corner market intersection. We always used to access from river left but there have since been additional homes built on that private drive. Just left of center ever since the 1987 flood washed the rocks out down the middle, or was that Paul Brown and a crow-bar, I forget.
Open side up.

Thanks to all for the insight. We're hoping to make it out Friday for the clinic, but I appreciate the help in advance!

Hey Ray--what's the water level going to be like on Saturday? I think the water level will be medium medium at best. The level seems to be holding steady, despite the cold nights (that's the good news). The river is entirely contained within the banks -- and not flooded over onto the grass at the put in, for example. At the present level, it's a little bit of a bumpy ride. There's really no way to miss all the rocks. And some sections are shallow, which will likely prevent times from being too fast. I hope to run the St. George again tomorrow and will post an update

I am going to try to make the run with you on Friday. I should be there right around 4pm. I am a middle level paddler new to downriver racing. It will be good to get a little guidance and advice.

Ran the St. George again today. Several other canoers and kayakers also out enjoying the river and the brilliant sunshine. The level is about 3 inches lower than last weekend. I've run it when it was lower. (Note to Fred: you'll want the bring a heavy plastic boat; it's the only way to get down through ;D ).
Actually, the level is still high enough to be fun -- and I'm guessing the level will come up several inches by Saturday, both with the rain forecast for tonight and the warming temps. I'll be using my lightweight kevlar boat and expect to pick up a few scratches but nothing more.
See y'all on Saturday.
